Maria João Guia – Ph.D. (summa cum laude) at the University of Coimbra (Faculty of Law / Economics / centre for Social Studies).

Maria João Guia is the author of a Ph.D. thesis: “Immigration, ‘Crimmigration’ and Violent Crime. The convicted Inmates and the Representations on Immigration and Crime”. She is an Associate Researcher at the Center of Human Rights, at the Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra. She published two books on Immigration and Crime (2008 and 2010), organised another in the Portuguese language on crimmigration (2012), co-edited the book “Social Control and Justice: Crimmigration in the Age of Fear” (2012) with Maartje van der Woude and Joanne van der Leun and she is co-editor and editor of forthcoming publications. She was appointed in 2012 as a SYLFF Fellow for her leadership and organisational skills with a grant to develop academic projects. CINETS network (www.crimmigrationcontrol.com) has been one of her academic priorities. She organised and co-organised various panels, workshops, discussion groups and conferences under topics as Immigration and Crime, Crimmigration, Human Trafficking, the Rights of victims in criminal processes, the Rights of immigrants, Incarceration, and others.
